Maya Rockeymoore Cummings Statement on Trump Administration’s Attack on DACA

From the America Dream and Martin Luther King’s Dream to the Dreamers, Americans have a love for dreams because we fundamentally believe that everyone deserves opportunity and hope for a better future.

That’s why we can’t let one man and his allies kill our dreams.

Time and again, the Trump Administration has demonstrated its willingness to act in a manner that does not square with our most cherished values. Their decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program underscores their consistent opposition to extending a ladder of opportunity to diverse people. In this instance, young adults who arrived in the U.S. with their immigrant parents as children and who are now striving to excel and make a positive contribution to society.

Trump and Sessions can try to change the face of America but they cannot change the heart of America.

Members of Congress now have a chance to demonstrate they can be responsible and fair legislators by passing the DREAM Act, which will give these deserving young people the legal protection they need to thrive. And to help Congress do the right thing we need to remind them at every turn that it is their job to solve problems, represent diverse constituents, and stand up to demagogues who seek to destroy the character and the composition of our country.

It’s time for Americans to dream again by standing with the Dreamers.
