Oprah’s bombshell interview with Meghan and Harry reminds us there are at least two sides to every story. And when it comes to family, in-laws in particular, tensions can run deep when outsiders with little-to-no history with the people or culture of the institution come in and disrupt the status quo.

I believe that Meghan went into her marriage to Harry determined to do the best job possible to support her husband while serving the people of the United Kingdom, including its diverse commonwealth nations. And yet — after an initial honeymoon — Meghan ran into what seemed to be petty disagreements behind palace walls, that then became a public wall of lies and innuendo that played out on the front pages of tabloids. What are we to make of the extraordinary series of events that led to she and Harry’s difficulties and ultimate departure from The Royal Family? The stage was set before they were born.

First, It was clear early on that Meghan — who possesses the late Princess Diana’s glamour and beauty but also has a refreshingly modern track record of career and service accomplishments prior to her marriage — had the potential to capture the hearts and minds of people around the world. Like Diana, her popularity may have haunted the House of Windsor because of its possibility of overshadowing and usurping Queen Elizabeth’s own influence…
